Luminous readers
I put this one in mainly because it shows how little trust you or anyone should put in gambling supply house catalog copy. Some of the gimmicks they list, which the amateur cheat buys because he knows no better, are strictly sucker items. When the would-be cheat orders a deck of luminous readers at $12.50 to $18 per deck, he receives by express (these boys avoid using the mails) a red-¬backed deck of cards whose backs bear large numerals lightly marked in with green pencil. You also get a cheap pair of glasses with red-tinted lenses or a red-tinted, transparent eyeshade. When the card is viewed in red light the red back design fades out and the green markings turn dark and become visible for you alone. If you suspect this gimmick, simply ask to borrow the glasses or eyeshade for a moment.

Casino and Players
Consulting for the Casinos
One aspect of the services Jeffrey Compton and I offer at Compton Dancer Consulting is, naturally enough, consulting with casinos. Many gamblers wonder how I can give useful advice to players, while at the same time advising the casinos. They feel I should pick one side or the other.
Let me explain how I feel about it.
Casino Promotions
Casinos and players must both survive for either to survive. If no one ever won at the casinos, the players would stop coming. And if the players won all the time, the casinos would go out of business. Players want to learn how to play better, so I tell them what I know. Casinos want to offer promotions in order to increase business without getting killed by professionals , so I share my knowledge with them, too.
Many players take an “us versus them” attitude with casinos. The players are the “good guys” and the casinos are the “bad guys.” I don’t see it that way. If casinos don’t make money from the weaker players, there won’t be any money to pay the stronger players. I see no inconsistency between teaching casinos how to make money off the former, while teaching players how to join the ranks of the latter. The better players still win and so do the casinos. It’s a stable relationship.
Jeffrey’s specialty is to assist casinos in developing effective slot clubs that attract profitable business to the casino by giving a good deal to the players. The better players can take advantage of the slot clubs and prosper. Less proficient players lose enough to support both the better players and the casinos’ business.
Casinos are not Churches
They are in business to make money And for casinos to make money, players must lose money (or spend money for other things in a casino). Winning players have to understand this. Sometimes players get angry when a casino removes machines or reduces benefits. Go ahead and get angry if that makes you feel better. But it’s a fact of life and it will continue to happen. But for every opportunity taken away, another one pops up.
There are things Jeffrey and I do not do. Casinos have asked us to identify proficient players and tell them which players are team members. Although we get accused of it regularly, we’ve never done this and never will. It’s true that I know most of the top pros in Las Vegas and indeed I’m one of them; still, casinos will have to identify these players in other ways. It frequently happens that a casino makes a change and Jeffrey and I are accused of masterminding it.
The truth is, it usually has nothing to do with us.
The dealer is unlucky; the people next to you annoy you. You just changed from a Jekyle to a Hyde. Many a time I wished I had a camera to take some of the expression on their faces when they are going through this change. Did yon ever see how same players look when they have the big bet and are out of money? Their expression is like a little child who is saying, “Who am I and where am I?” It happens so fast that they’re not aware of what is happing to them. The system player is indoctrinate with the ea that according to the law of averages they are supposed win one bet out of so many bets they make, but they forget to remember that the law of averages doesn’t always act that way. After losing 3 or 4 bets they think they are supposed to win the next one. It doesn’t have to happen. You can lose the next 20 bets. Remember, there is nobody that can tell you what is going to happen on the next bet.
