Promotions Come and Go

Caesars Palace used to give away free decks of used cards. It wasn’t advertised anywhere, but if you knew about it, all you had to do was walk up to the cashier and ask for a deck. How did we know about the deal? In this case, we read about it in the Las Vegas Advisor This is the sort of promotion that you find when you keep your eyes and ears wide open. It’s also the kind of promotion that’s here today, gone tomorrow One time you’ll go to Caesars Palace and the cashier will smile and hand you a deck of cards. Then the next time she’ll look at you like you’re out of your mind (and swear that Caesars has never given away free cards). It happens all the time.

The Back Room

"I'll tell you exactly what happened," 1 told Brown, who readied himself to take notes as 1 spoke. "I went up to that roulette table and bet a black chip and lost. 1 usually don't bet that much money, but I'd been drinking the whole night and started gambling recklessly. 1 was making bets all over the casino. 1 doesn’t even remember on which tables. After 1 made that roulette bet, 1 went to the showroom to retrieve my jacket, which 1 had left there after the show. 1 was drinking champagne all during the show probably the reason why 1 left the jacket there in the first place. 1 was just too drunk to remember to put it back on. Then when 1 came back into the casino, the pit boss from that roulette table walked up to me and told me 1 had a winning bet that couldn't be paid if 1 wasn't at the table. To tell you the truth, 1 don't remember making a second bet at that table. 1 was drunk, but even so, 1 should have remembered that.
Well, 1 didn't argue. 1 mean, after all, if a pit boss came up to you and told you that your bet had just won $3,500, would you argue? So I figured that 1 must have made that winning bet if he was telling me that I did. I went back to the roulette table with him and they paid me the money. Then I let the bet ride and won again. I thought it was going to be my lucky night. The next thing I know, I'm sitting here being accused of a crime." I had recounted all that as fast as it came into my head.

Roulette Table

Brown finished jotting something on the pad, and then asked, "Why did you try to run away when you were at the online casino cage?" "Try and run away" I feigned confusion. "What are you talking about?" Regardless of the fact that Brown knew I was full of shit, I must have sounded convincing. "The pit boss and security guards all stated that you ran away from them as they approached you at the cage." "I wasn't running away from anyone," I retorted, my mind moving as rapidly as possible. "I was at the cage cashing out all those green chips they paid me at the roulette table. The woman counting my chips on the counter was taking forever, and then I remembered that I had a date with this girl Veronica whom I'd met at the lake. You should see her." I was thinking that he'd already interviewed her. "Then you'd understand why I didn't want to be late."
Brown removed a photograph from the folder on the desk and passed it to me. It was a color still of Duke wearing the cap, taken by the overhead camera at the roulette table. "Do you know this man?" he asked, without implying that I did. "No," I said, giving him back Duke's photo. He replaced that photo and took out another. It was Joe's, taken by the same camera. "And him?" "I never saw him before in my life." I knew that the two girls had squealed everything, including the day spent at the lake with all of us, but I also knew that none of that could be proven. Perham they had proof I'd been with Jerry inside the showroom, but he was' the guy who'd switched the chips, so that wouldn't matter much.
"You weren't aware that these two guys were playing roulette wheel on that table?" Brown asked. "I don't bother looking at other players when I'm gambling. Tb only thing that concerns me is whether I win or lose." I expected him to show me Jerry's picture then, but he eighth didn't have it or deemed it no longer necessary, given my uncooperativeness. He put the notepad back inside the briefcase and left the room, leaving the briefcase on the desk.
