A good rule to paste in your hat is never to play for money with one-way cards, i.e., cards whose backs bear pictures or designs that are not symmetrical from top to bottom. During play, a cheat can arrange such a deck so that high cards are right side up, low cards upside down. I know it sounds obvious, but card cheats know from experience that the obvious device is sometimes the one least likely to be suspected. Most players dismiss this idea, if it does occur to them, as too obvious and primitive a device to be used. Therefore the cheat, well aware of this, sometimes uses it; and a quick shuffle, after turning half the pack end for end, will destroy the arrangement and the evidence if anyone shows any sign of suspicion.

With the development of electronic games came the electronic slot machine. To play it, one need only follow the instructions for the simpler, manual machines. These machines have computers-not moving parts. The machines will even display messages such as "Tough Luck-Try Again," or, "Go for One More Nickel!" or if you're lucky, "You're A Winner!!" The company that designed the programs for these micro-computer slot machines even has available a slot machine cassette for home use on their television games. Look for these machines. They are different and exciting!

In Nevada, and in the Caribbean, there is no actual percentage of the "take" that must be paid out on anyone machine, according to local law. For that reason, particularly in Las Vegas, some pay back as much as 97 percent of their "take" and others as little as 40 percent. In New Jersey, however, the Casino Control Commission has legislated that every machine must pay back at least 83 percent of its "take." This does not mean that anyone putting in ten dollars worth of coins will be guaranteed an eight-dollar and-thirty-cent return.
As more and more casinos open in New Jersey, the percentage of the return on slot machines gets larger and larger. Some even pay back as much as 90 percent.
Some machines will pay back two or three coins with almost every other pull of the handle. Others will payout infrequently, but in larger amounts, sometimes in huge amounts or jackpots. There are payoffs on record, in Nevada, of amounts in excess of five hundred thousand dollars.

I have a friend, George Singer, who insists that a one- dollar slot machine in Circus Hotel in Las Vegas, "called" to him. He made a bee-line for the machine, inserted three dollars, pulled the handle, and won $100! He insists that machines "call" to players. Who knows? Anyway, go find a machine that looks pretty. You might even hear it "call" to you. Put in one, two, up to five coins, pull the handle, and watch. The wheels go spinning, the images shadow, they slow down -bar-bar-cherry. A loser! Try again.
You can't win very much money, but you'll have a hell of a lot of fun. That's what gaming is all about. And, who knows, you might get those sevens for the giant payoff.
