A good rule to paste in your hat is never to play for money with one-way cards, i.e., cards whose backs bear pictures or designs that are not symmetrical from top to bottom. During play, a cheat can arrange such a deck so that high cards are right side up, low cards upside down. I know it sounds obvious, but card cheats know from experience that the obvious device is sometimes the one least likely to be suspected. Most players dismiss this idea, if it does occur to them, as too obvious and primitive a device to be used. Therefore the cheat, well aware of this, sometimes uses it; and a quick shuffle, after turning half the pack end for end, will destroy the arrangement and the evidence if anyone shows any sign of suspicion.

Dice History
Dice have a history that goes back thousands of years. They may have been invented by a tribal witch doctor as a means to demonstrate his "magic." By throwing down marked sticks, stones, or cubes, various spots turned up, and by reading them, he made all of his decisions. Since they rarely came up the same way for each decision, it appeared as if there was divine intervention. It is very possible that he believed that the gods had a hand in the results. Dice, or derivatives thereof (marked sticks, bones, ivory, bronze, peach pits, etc.), have been found in Egyptian tombs, in African burial grounds, in Korean graves, and throughout the Orient. Even American Indians played the casino game.
The Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., has samples of Egyptian dice that have been dated to approximately 600 B.C. The unusual thing about these dice is that they are very modern in appearance. There are six "even" sides with markings indented on each of the six faces.
Dice that are used in legal gaming today are manufactured to very exact specifications. As a matter of fact, they are advertised to be within tolerances of 1/10,000 of an inch. I would believe this advertising! The entire gaming industry depends on this accuracy.
Dice Structure
Most use a standard of three-quarter inch perfect cubes. These cubes are made from bars of plastic which are cut to very specific measurements. After being cut, each die face is drilled to an exact depth to create the spots for the numbers one through six. These drilled holes are then filled with a special material that replaces, exactly, the weight of the plastic material that had been removed. This operation helps to keep all the dice exactly alike in weight, size, etc. When the spots are dry, the die is then polished and buffed to a razor-sharp edge and is stamped with a monogram, a logo, or a code number, or any combination of the three. After all of this has been done, the individual pairs of dice are generally packed in sets of five, wrapped in foil, and shipped to casinos around the world. Most dice that are used in casinos are made of a transparent red plastic. The spots are usually white. Transparent plastic is used to help prevent "loaded" dice from coming to the table. It's easy to see through transparent plastic.
Besides being absolutely square, equal in weight to one another, flush, and with razor-sharp edges, dice must also conform to a standard regarding the position of the faces in relation to one another. Opposite faces must total seven? The one must always be on the face that is opposite the six. The two must always be on the face opposite the five, and the three is always on the face opposite the four. Placement rules and also stipulate which side is adjacent to which other side.
