A good rule to paste in your hat is never to play for money with one-way cards, i.e., cards whose backs bear pictures or designs that are not symmetrical from top to bottom. During play, a cheat can arrange such a deck so that high cards are right side up, low cards upside down. I know it sounds obvious, but card cheats know from experience that the obvious device is sometimes the one least likely to be suspected. Most players dismiss this idea, if it does occur to them, as too obvious and primitive a device to be used. Therefore the cheat, well aware of this, sometimes uses it; and a quick shuffle, after turning half the pack end for end, will destroy the arrangement and the evidence if anyone shows any sign of suspicion.

Beware of Overconfidence
Beware of overconfidence. When we win we feel good. When we win big we may feel as if we own the world, that we’re something special. We’re suddenly on a roll, and now is the time to play hard for all the times we lost..
This is when we are most inclined to have a drink or two, to get loose and “live it up.” We become careless, reckless, and irresponsible. With our defenses down, we proceed to ignore little things like odds, percentages, and reasonable bet limits. Like a big, powerful ship going full speed without a rudder, we play on and on, following no particular set course. And where do we end up? In the dry dock, that’s where.
When you win, whether big or small, keep from developing an overconfident attitude. Keep your wits about you at all times. Don’t throw caution to the winds. If you won, see it as the result of a successful business decision, not as an indication that things are now going your way. The outcome of your bet was favorable, that’s all. The next bet is its own event and isn’t influenced by the events of the previous roll or hand. Keep your feet on the ground and you’ll more likely keep at least some of your winnings in your pocket.
Don't Count on System
Don’t count on some system to strike it rich. Systems can sometimes help you develop a play strategy and thereby add to the interest of the game. They are not necessarily reliable investment guides. Committing money according to a system, particularly one advocating increasing wagers upon a loss because then a win is “due,” is often just another way to lose money. Systems players in many cases do no better than systematically lose. (However, this does not include card counting strategies for , as these are not considered systems but proven techniques when properly applied.)

Ask questions whenever there is something you don’t understand. Dealers will be happy to explain anything you don’t understand. most applicable information is available in books. You can save yourself a lot of uncertainty and money by reading up on a game before undertaking play. If you decide to learn by experience, it will cost you many times more than a couple of books. The advantage of a book is that you can go through it at your own pace. By learning what’s recommended and what to avoid before you go to the , you’ll save yourself a lot of grief. Casino play will teach you in time, but those lessons can get awfully expensive. And once at the casino, don’t be intimidated into playing along without understanding what’s happening. Ask questions when in doubt about anything. Don’t risk proving a sucker for fear of appearing uninformed.
Money Management
Always practice good money management. That is critical. If you can’t manage your money, you can’t play . Don’t get extravagant or erratic in your betting. Play at a level you can comfortably afford. Don’t try to impress other people. Playing to put on a show for other people can prove awfully expensive, and chances are they’re much less interested in your performance than in their own. Handle bets as business decisions and concentrate on informed strategy when making them.
